Let's Talk Film: Sound Effects

This half term we’re partnering up with Flatpack and composer and sound designer Iain Armstrong for a special short film screening for families. After the films, Iain will give a short demonstration on how you can apply your own sounds to films using an extract from Om Nom Nom. You’ll then have an opportunity to have a go yourselves using bits and bobs that you’ll have at home.

Featuring four short films: Bearing by Czech filmmaker Daniela Hýbnerová about a bear who forgets their offspring whilst out on a walk, the colourful Om Nom Nom from Japan, the wonderfully creative Submarine Sandwich by American animator PES, and Link about a a pair of friends connected by their hair.

To submit a question to Iain in advance for the Q&A, fill in this form.

We are using a platform called Eventive to host the festival. If you are having any problems accessing the event, please take a look at our guide to using Eventive.

The Workshop

This event will introduce you to the art of foley – the reproduction of everyday sound effects that are added to films and animations. You’ll learn about what foley is and how foley artists work. We’ll recreate the sound from a short clip of the animation Om Nom Nom, demonstrating different foley techniques that you can try at home. The event will end with a short Q&A.

The workshop is delivered by Iain Armstrong. Iain is a composer and sound designer based in Sandwell. He’s interested in the creative potential of sound and encouraging people to listen. Iain works on a wide range of projects including theatre, film, dance and podcast production. He’s designed sound effects and written music for numerous plays and toured with Little Earthquake’s The Tell Tale Heart performing live foley. He’s currently working on a short comedy western film and a podcast series of original audio drama.
